Romania Arms Fueling African war and Jihand

During the Cold war, Romania was the Ninth Largest Arms Exporter in the World.

Currently, there are nine (9) companies in Romain that produce Small arms and Light Weapons. These include Assault Rifles, grenades, grenade launchers, explosives and pistols.

A Number of Romanian Government officials have been implicate in illicit arms transfers, most coming out Otopemi Airport in Bucharest. Romanian arms have been found in Kosovo, Liberia, Rwanda, as as well as the Afghan Taliban.

Romanian arms supplied UNITA Rebels in Angola via Togo and Burkina Faso to, according to a 2004 Report.

Romania is under pressure to bring their arms dealings under control as they seek to join NATO.

The Romanian National Agency for Export Controls ( ANCEX ) licenses and regulates these exports. The Inter Ministerial Council ( IMC ) is the investigating agency, with representative from security and intelligence groups inside Romania. They meet monthly to approve or disapprove arms export permits. and there is evidence of regular infighting.

Message and media traffic suggests that Romanian Arms are being sent to Somalia through Eritria. The weapons sales certificate, if checked by Romania, probably suggests that the arms are being bought by Eritria for its own use, however, the volume and frequency of the shipments show this is not true.

Two Doctores Without Borders Released in Somalis

Nairobi/Mogadishu - Two European aid workers employed by Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) who were kidnapped in Somalia over a week ago have been released, reports said Tuesday. The BBC cited militant Islamist group al-Shabaab as saying it had released the Danish nurse and Belgian doctor.

However, a regional spokeswoman for MSF in the Kenyan capital Nairobi could not immediately confirm the reports.

The pair were taken nine days ago on the way to Hudur, the capital of the Bakol region in south-west Somalia.

A bloody insurgency is ongoing in Somalia, where al-Shabaab is fighting the western-backed government.

Aid workers and journalists have been regular targets for abduction and murder.

According to the UN, 35 employees of aid agencies were killed and 26 kidnapped in Somalia last year.

Pakistan Tabliban Fund War with Gems

Daily Times4 May 2009
By Akhtar Amin

Swat Taliban are using money earned from mining and selling gemstones in Swat and Shangla for terrorism, entrepreneurs from the Swat valley said on Sunday.

Entrepreneurs in a Gem Bazaar – organised by the Pakistan Gems and Jewellery Development Company at Namak Mandi – told Daily Times that Taliban were using the money for terrorist activities in Swat, Buner and Dir districts of Malakand division.

  • Babu Khan, an entrepreneur from Swat who had displayed emeralds in the bazaar, said that Taliban had started extensive mining through hired labourers and were selling the precious stones in the black market.
  • He said plunderers had also taken over several mines of high quality gemstones, one of which had earned the government about Rs 90 million in a single auction in the past.
  • Another entrepreneur from Swat, Muhammad Ali, told Daily Times that Taliban had also taken over the Mingora emerald mine.
  • The Shamozai emeralds mine, some 25 kilometres from Mingora, and the Gujaro Killay emerald mine in the adjacent district of Shangla, are also under the control of the Swat Taliban.

Stones extracted from these mines are auctioned in the premises of the Mingora mine every Sunday, where dealers from all over Pakistan come to shop, he said.

The federal and provincial governments have not taken any action over “this looting and plunder of state property”, Muhammad Ali said. Imran Inam, a senior official of the Gems and Jewellery Development Company, told Daily Times that the US was also concerned over the Taliban occupation of emerald mines in Swat and Shangla and had talked to the Pakistani government.

Troops Massing on Sudan-Chad Border

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon3 May 2009 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon voiced his concern today at reports of the recent build-up and movement of armed elements on both sides of the Chad-Sudan border, and called on the two countries to ease tensions.

“In this context, the Secretary-General welcomes the discussions towards the normalization of bilateral relations between the Governments of Chad and Sudan held this week in Doha,” Mr. Ban''s spokesperson said in a statement issued today.

The Secretary-General, in his most recent report on the deployment of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID), stated that “the security situation along the Sudan-Chad border continued to be tense and unpredictable” during February and March of this year.

Last week in a briefing to the Security Council, Rodolphe Adada, the Joint African Union-UN Special Representative for Darfur and head of UNAMID, cited the state of relations between Sudan and Chad as an important factor with regard to the ongoing conflict in Darfur.

An estimated 300,000 people have been killed and another 2.7 million have been forced from their homes in Darfur since fighting erupted in 2003, pitting rebels against Government forces and allied Janjaweed militiamen.
