Mexican authorities arrest suspected U.S. arms trafficker Robert Hamlin Wainwright, prepare to send him north. MORELIA, MICHOACAN STATE, MEXICO (JULY 14, 2009) REUTERS - Mexican authorities arrested Robert Hamlin Wainwright on Tuesday (July 14) in the city of Zamora, Mexico, following a capture and extradition request by U.S. government for arms trafficking charges and violating terms of conditional freedom.

After his arrest, Hamlin was transferred by government officials to the migration station in Morelia to begin his extradition process. Although U.S. authorities considered Hamlin to be a highly dangerous fugitive, Mexican migration official Luis Ibarrola said Hamlin was not being extradited for arms trafficking charges.

"We don't have any information regarding his responsibility in arms trafficking from the U.S. into Mexico or the contrary. What we know is that he's an expert in arms operations and, according to U.S. law, one of the crimes attributed to him is possession of arms," Ibarrola told Reuters. After staying for a couple of hours at Morelia's migration station, Hamlin was taken by migration officials to a local hospital for a routine health check to monitor his diabetic condition.
