Algerian security services have arrested R. Rabah, aka Zakaria, the principal organiser of terrorist kidnapping operations in Kabylia designed to raise funds for the al-Qaeda Organisation in the Islamic Maghreb, Liberte reported on Wednesday (July 4th).
Zakaria was arrested and three other terrorists were killed during an operation in Oued Ksari in Tizi Ouzou province.
- Security services seized weapons and a large amount of money, presumably obtained through ransoms.
- Liberte quotes security sources as saying that, over the past few months, Zakaria has collected more than 40 billion dinars for al-Qaeda "emir" Abou Moussab Abdelouadoud. The money was allegedly used for the purchase of weapons and explosives and for financing car bomb attacks in Tizi Ouzou, Boumerdes and Algiers.
- According to Liberte, more than 89 kidnappings were recorded between March 2006 and June 2007 in Kabyliya, 90% of which were executed by Zakaria.
- In related news, El Khabar reported that two terrorists have surrendered to Algerian army in Hassi Ziane, Djelfa province.
- Reportedly, one of the repentant terrorists is a leader of Migrants Troop, a terrorist group operating along the Boukhil mountains in Djelfa and Mssila.
